Kathak for Beginners: First 30 Days Learning Plan

Published 5 November 20257 min readUpdated 22 Apr 2026

The first 30 days of any new skill decide whether it sticks or fades. For Kathak, this is doubly true — your feet hurt, your mind struggles to recall bols, and progress feels invisible. This day-by-day 30-day Kathak plan for beginners will carry you through that critical first month with structure, milestones and motivation.

Before You Begin: Your Pre-Day-1 Checklist

  • A clear 6×6 ft floor space.
  • Comfortable Indian or athletic clothing.
  • A device to record yourself (your phone is perfect).
  • A notebook for taal and bol notes.
  • One enrolled online or offline class with a real guru.

Week 1: Foundation (Days 1–7)

Goal: Build the body's relationship with the floor and learn to stand correctly.

  • Day 1: Namaskar to the floor and your guru. Learn the basic Kathak stance — feet together, knees soft, spine tall.
  • Day 2–3: Slow tatkar — Tha, Thei, Tat, Aa, Tha, Thei, Tat, Aa. 5 minutes only. Both feet, one at a time.
  • Day 4–5: Increase tatkar to 10 minutes. Recite bols out loud while doing it.
  • Day 6: Learn 4 basic mudras — Pataka, Tripataka, Ardhachandra, Mushti.
  • Day 7: Rest day. Watch one classical Kathak performance on YouTube. Notice the footwork.

Week 2: Rhythm Awakening (Days 8–14)

Goal: Make peace with Teentaal — the 16-beat king of Kathak.

  • Day 8: Memorise the 16 beats — Dha Dhin Dhin Dha, Dha Dhin Dhin Dha, Dha Tin Tin Ta, Ta Dhin Dhin Dha. Clap, don't dance.
  • Day 9–10: Tatkar in Teentaal at slow speed.
  • Day 11–12: Tatkar in two speeds — slow (vilambit) and medium (madhya).
  • Day 13: Combine tatkar with the 4 mudras. Notice your hands forgetting your feet — that's normal.
  • Day 14: Rest. Record yourself doing tatkar and compare with Day 7's clip mentally.

Week 3: First Movements (Days 15–21)

Goal: Move beyond standing — introduce direction and grace.

  • Day 15: Learn basic neck movements — Sundari (side), Tirayaka, Parivartita.
  • Day 16: Add neck movement to tatkar. Slow only.
  • Day 17: Eye movements (drishti bhed) — left, right, up, down with focus.
  • Day 18: Learn the basic walk (gat) — graceful Kathak walking on toes.
  • Day 19: First single chakkar attempt. Use a wall for support. Don't worry about dizziness.
  • Day 20: Full warm-up + tatkar + walk + 1 chakkar. 30 minutes.
  • Day 21: Rest. Stretch your calves. Massage your feet with warm oil.

Week 4: Putting It Together (Days 22–30)

Goal: Perform a tiny piece — your first 30-second item.

  • Day 22: Learn a simple tukra (small composition) of 8 beats.
  • Day 23: Learn a simple tihai — repeated phrase ending on Sam.
  • Day 24: Combine: Namaskar → Tatkar 16 beats → Tukra → Tihai → Bow.
  • Day 25: Practice this combination 3 times.
  • Day 26: Add facial expression — a soft smile throughout.
  • Day 27: Add costume! Wear your best Indian outfit. Dance the combination.
  • Day 28: Record a polished video.
  • Day 29: Show your guru. Get one piece of feedback to work on for the next month.
  • Day 30: Celebrate! Watch your Day 1 attempt vs Day 28 video. The growth will shock you.

Daily Habits That Multiply Results

  • Recite bols silently during boring meetings.
  • Listen to Kathak compositions while commuting.
  • Stretch your ankles morning and night.
  • Hydrate — dancing is dehydrating work.

What to Expect After 30 Days

You will not be a Kathak dancer in 30 days — and that's wonderful. You will be a beginner with a real foundation. By Day 90, your tatkar will be clean. By Day 180, your first full composition will be ready. By Day 365, you will perform on stage. The 30-day plan is just the launchpad.
